Carnella Marshall Biography

Carnella Marshall, daughter of Clifford Marshall Sr. and Gloria Gaines Marshall, was raised with a deep appreciation for family, community, and heritage. She grew up in Clarksville, Oklahoma, one of the state's historic all-Black towns, where strong family bonds and cultural traditions shaped her childhood.

Some of Carnella's most treasured memories were made at the home of her grandparents, Fletcher Gaines and Josephine Howell Gaines, in Tullahassee, Oklahoma. Their home served as the heart of a large and loving family. Fletcher and Josephine raised ten children, and every Sunday the family would gather together in Tullahassee for Sunday dinner.

These weekly gatherings became a cherished tradition. The women of the family filled the kitchen with the aromas of home-cooked meals while sharing stories, laughter, and fellowship. Outside, the children spent the day playing together, creating memories that would last a lifetime. For Carnella, Sundays in Tullahassee represented the warmth of family, the strength of community, and the values that were passed down from one generation to the next.

Growing up surrounded by the love of her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins gave Carnella a strong sense of identity and belonging. The experiences she shared in Clarksville and Tullahassee helped shape her character and instilled in her a lifelong appreciation for family traditions, faith, and community connections.

Today, Carnella's story reflects the rich legacy of Oklahoma's historic Black towns and the enduring importance of family gatherings that bring generations together.
